Enterprising pupils from Kilgraston School near Bridge of Earn have raised £600 for an African women’s education charity.
The youngsters held a week of events entitled Half the Sky, which consisted of numerous activities and challenges to raise awareness of Camfed.
They also learned of the struggles faced by women in Africa to gain an education.
The title of the week was taken from a Chinese proverb meaning that women hold up half the sky and the theme was intellect, to reflect this year’s “sacred heart goal.”
Running the fund-raising were girls from the sixth form, who took it in turns to present an assembly every day on a different subject, before taking part in activities at lunchtime and after school.
The senior pupils also formed a team to take on the teachers in a University Challenge-style quiz, while the heads of houses took part in a six-mile walk from the centre of Perth to simulate the average distance travelled by an African child to get to school.
The younger pupils completed a similar challenge by walking round the school campus several times with their books.
Gemma, from Perth Loves Zumba, came to help teach the girls an African-style dance and the week ended with pupils setting off lanterns, with their hopes and dreams for the future written on them, before a “talentless show” to round off the inspirational event.
