A campaign to get 55 Fifers to sign up for a gruelling event in aid of a worthy cause will gather pace this week.

Maggie’s Fife is celebrating its fifth birthday this year, which coincides with the charity’s largest annual fund-raising event, the Maggie’s Monster Bike and Hike.

The 24-hour team challenge, which covers the 73 miles from Fort William to Inverness, saw a record number of participants take part last year and raised £600,000 for Maggie’s Centres across the country.

With that in mind, community fund-raiser Tumong Edwards has launched a drive to get 55 Fifers to take part this year, with an open evening at Maggie’s Fife on Thursday from 6pm to 8pm.

Tumong said, “The Monster Open Evening is a chance for people to come along and meet other people taking part, some of whom have done so before, to ask questions about the event, training and fund-raising, and also to see exactly what they will be raising money for.”

The event has already captured the imagination of 30 Fifers. Karen Wotherspoon and colleagues Julia Cargill, Pearl Wilson and Lisa Cauchie from MGt in Kirkcaldy have signed up with a team.

Karen said, “Sadly cancer has affected my family over the years and only two weeks ago I lost my aunt. She fought hard over the years but the last six months had taken a toll on her.

“When my colleague Bruce Tasker, who uses Maggie’s, signed up for Monster and started pushing for help fund-raising I just thought, ‘I could do this’ and sent out messages to all my friends.”

The Monster Bike and Hike takes place on April 30 and May 1.
