Medical practices of yesteryear are available for examination at an exhibition unveiled in Blairgowrie Community Hospital.
The display includes medical equipment and surgical instruments, many of them donated by Dr Ron Pyle, who is now retired, Dr Iain Mackay and Dr Karalyn McNeil.
Part of the exhibition also includes photographs to help bring the history of the hospital to life.
Dr Graham Lowe, honorary curator of Tayside Medical History Museum at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, and Matthew Jarron, curator of Dundee University museums collection, have provided additional specialist information and, together with Dr James McKellican, have been responsible for assembling the exhibition.
Dr McKellican, a native of Blairgowrie and a retired Dundee GP, has written a booklet charting the history of the two local hospitals-the Cottage Hospital in Blairgowrie and Strathmore Hospital in Rattray.
The Friends of Blairgowrie Community Hospital supported the venture by funding the booklet costs and arranging for an original architect’s drawings from 1901 to be framed and put on display in the hospital’s reception area.
Dr Lowe said, “This exhibition has been a real team effort and I am very grateful for the enthusiastic support received from staff at the hospital, local GPs and members of The Friends of Blairgowrie Community Hospital.
“For the past 20 years the medical museum has been highlighting and celebrating the development of healthcare in Tayside and this medical display and the new booklet provide a fascinating snapshot of local healthcare in the Blairgowrie area over the years.
“This is the second time a display has been on view outwith Ninewells Hospital and I am looking forward taking other displays to other hospitals in Tayside.”
