A court has heard how a golfer went on the rampage at a Kinross hotel after consuming so much alcohol he lost the plot.
Paul Kernachan had been enjoying a sporting trip with friends and had settled in for an overnight stay at The Green Hotel with the help of “around 12 pints.”
After his friends retired, the 32-year-old decided to make his own fun, leaving his accommodation provider up to £1000 out of pocket.
Night staff rushed to investigate after be began to rampage through a rear reception area, grabbing furniture and hurling it through an open door into the hotel’s garden.
Depute fiscal Stuart Richardson told Perth Sheriff Court on Wednesday, “The accused was at the hotel as a guest as part of a golfing party. He became extremely drunk and attracted the attention of night staff at around 3.30 because of the noise he was making.
“They found him throwing furniture from a reception area at the rear of the hotel out into the back garden. The police were called, but the accused’s only explanation was that he was part of a party of friends but had lost track of the rest.
“I understand his friends were all tucked up in bed.”
Mr Richardson said the tables and chairs were all broken, with the damage estimated to have cost the hotel around £1000.
Kernachan, of Lang Avenue, Renfrew, pleaded guilty to a charge that, on September 5, at The Green Hotel, The Muirs, Kinross, he conducted himself in a disorderly manner and threw items of furniture into the gardens there.
Solicitor David Holmes told the court his client had made every effort to apologise to the hotel for his actions.
“Mr Kernachan is a hard-working man who has made an effort to contact the hotel and make things right. He has saved money to pay for the damage and has made an offer of £500, which has been accepted by the management.
“He accepts that he will not be welcome at the hotel in the future, but he has done what he can to apologise.”
Mr Holmes told the court his client had consumed around 12 pints of lager when in the company of others, with the drinks bought by a number of different people.
“He thinks that one of his drinks might have been spiked, but accepts that his conduct does not really make a great deal of sense,” he said.
Sheriff Michael Fletcher fined Kernachan £250 and gave him three months to pay.
