Charity efforts to honour Susan Crosbie’s memory

The husband and brother of a Carnoustie mother-of-two have started raising money for cancer charities after her death.

Nurse Susan Crosbie (38) passed away at Roxburghe House in Dundee in March after being diagnosed with signet ring cell myeloma in 2009, a cancer which affects just 100 people worldwide.

Susan was laid to rest in Parkgrove Crematorium, Friockheim, and £1480 was collected at the funeral and given to the Roxburghe Comfort Fund.

Now her husband Rab and brother Gordon will embark on a series of events for Macmillan Cancer Support and Maggie’s.

Gordon said, “Rab and I have set a date for our longest day golf challenge. We will be attempting to play 72 holes in one day on July 6.

“We will be playing all three golf courses at Carnoustie (Championship, Burnside Links and Buddon Links) and 18 holes at Panmure (Barry).”

“We have already presented a cheque to Roxburghe Comfort Fund for £1480 which was collected at Susan’s funeral so we have decided to fund-raise for Macmillan Cancer Support and Maggie’s.

“Rab is also running the 10k in Glasgow for Macmillan.”

Gordon said, “We have no figure in mind but are just trying to raise as much as possible.

“We are doing the fund-raising to give something back and to say a big thanks to the charities that gave so much support to Susan and family during her treatment and to Rab for their continual support.”

Susan, who family and friends describe as “the life and soul of the party”, died after a long battle with the aggressive cancer.

Susan, mother to Ross and Jamie, told Rab and best friend Gillian Brand that she did not want tears at her wake and wanted it to be a celebration of her life.

She was educated at Carlogie Primary and Carnoustie High, where she was a keen athlete and netball player. She studied hospitality at Dundee College and, while head waitress in the sergeants’ mess at RM Condor, Arbroath, Susan met Rab, a kitchen porter.

The couple were together 10 years before marrying in 2000 at Panbride Church in Carnoustie and moving back to where Susan grew up, to start a family.

Susan achieved her ambition of becoming a nurse by training at Angus College and Dundee University, graduating in June 2009.To donate, visit www.justgiving.com/GordonBirseRabCrosbie.
