Keen Scots ramblers have done their bit to encourage people to get out and about in the nation’s countryside by suggesting some of their favourite walking routes.
The routes have been compiled into a new mobile phone app by the Kinross-based Ramblers Scotland, which hopes they will prove inspirational.
The resource builds upon the organisation’s Medal Routes project, which has been running since October 2011 in a bid to deliver legacy benefits from the 2012 Olympics and the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
The project has already created more than 360 routes, each under three miles long and mapped by volunteers.
The new app will make them even more easily available to all.
Users will gain “medals” every time they walk one of the routes and will have their names added to a leader board.
They will also have the opportunity to add their own routes to help others explore the best landscapes that Scotland can offer.
Medal Routes project officer Rob Burns said: “We are delighted to launch our Medal Routes walking app as a way of helping more people become more active in their daily lives.
“It will enable people to find paths and green spaces near where they live, work or visit, following routes easily and creating their own great walks to share with others.”
The app has been funded by the Ordnance Survey and aims to expand to feature more than 720 carefully considered routes by 2016.
It is available to download free for Apple and Android devices. Visit www.medalroutes.org.
