Two Dundee charities are hoping the city’s women will hunt out their finest frocks for an evening of dinner, music, entertainment and fund-raising fun.

The Mary Slessor Foundation and Dundee Heritage Trust have put together a Ladies’ Dinner.

The event’s guest speaker is singing star Linda Ormiston. Born in Motherwell, she’s become one of Britain’s most versatile artists, equally at home in opera, operetta, cabaret, or making an after dinner speech.

Linda studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and at the London Opera Centre. Since then she’s enjoyed a stellar career, performing all over the world, thinking nothing of performing in Monte Carlo one week and Vancouver, Tokyo or New York the next.

After a season with English Opera for All, she joined Scottish Opera. In 2001 she received an honorary degree from St Andrews University and an OBE. She continues to sing and also teaches music theatre at the Dance School of Scotland and at the RSAMD.

Further entertainment will be provided by Loadsaweeminsingin, The Inchture Rat Pack and Djembi Drummers.

The Rat Pack, made up of five barflies from the Inchture Hotel, have raised thousands of pounds for Tayside charities through their interpretation of hits by Sinatra, Dean Martin et al.

Dundee ladies Loadsaweeminsingin, meanwhile, are famed for their a cappella performances, while the Djembi Drummers provide some West African beats.

Dundee Heritage Trust looks after RRS Discovery and the accompanying Discovery Point Visitor Centre as well as Verdant Works.

The Mary Slessor Foundation is run by retired Dundee doctor Lawrie Mitchell and his wife Eme, and carries on the work begun by the Dundee missionary in Nigeria’s Cross River State in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Dundee’s Lord Provost John Letford will be at the dinner and Eme Mitchell, the descendent of Ma Eme, Mary Slessor’s closest friend in Nigeria, will be guest of honour.

The Inspiring Women Ladies Dinner takes place on Friday November 5 at the West Park Centre in Dundee. A drinks reception begins at 7pm and dinner is at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £35 and are available from www.maryslessor.org or from Dundee Heritage Trust at Discovery Point in Dundee. For information Email kimadamson@ dundeeheritage.co.uk or call 01382 309060.
