Police are still trying to trace the vehicle involved in an accident on the A90 Perth to Dundee road, which claimed the life of a 32-year-old man.

Officers investigating the death of Neil Smith, from Dundee, at Kinfauns early on Saturday morning believe the driver may be unaware they were involved in an accident.

They are appealing for lorry, bus and other HGV drivers who were travelling on the road at the time to check their vehicles for any damage or signs of a collision.

Mr Smith had been on a night out in Perth and is thought to have been making his way back to a friend’s house in the St Madoes area when the tragedy took place.

His body was discovered on the eastbound carriageway and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chief Inspector Sandy Bowman, the senior investigating officer, said, “Neil’s body was found on the carriageway about 4.30am by passing lorry drivers.

“We have already spoken to a number of lorry drivers who saw Neil walking along the side of the A90 but we still need to trace the vehicle responsible for colliding with him. It’s possible that the driver of the vehicle responsible is completely unaware that they have hit someone, or they may even have believed they had hit an animal, as it would still have been dark at the time of the collision.

“I would ask all drivers who were on the A90 in the early hours of Saturday morning, between midnight and 4.40am, to get in touch with us. That way we can check their vehicles.

“Through CCTV footage we are building up a picture of all vehicles that would have been on the road and we are making contact with all the companies we know would have a fleet on the road. Similarly, we are tracing the owners of cars and vans on the road in order to have vehicles examined.”

Mr Smith was a scene of crime officer with the Scottish Police Services Authority, based in Dundee. He had previously worked as a SOCO with the Metropolitan Police.

Anyone who has any information that may assist officers with their inquiries should get in touch with Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222 immediately.
