Angus Rotary Marafun organisers have run up another magnificent total for the Ninewells Cancer Campaign from the May family fun event around the streets of Forfar.

In a Canmore Room ceremony at Forfar’s Municipal buildings, Marafun convener David Valentine revealed the £12,000 total which will go to the campaign following the success of this year’s event taking Forfar Rotary Club’s support for the cause beyond the £160,000 barrier.

Mr Valentine said the five-figure result was a tribute to the hard work of all those involved in staging what was the seventh Marafun, as well as the support of the teams of runners who were sponsored to take on the town centre relay as part of a day-long programme of activities.

“From the very start this has been a real community effort and that is what has made it so rewarding for those of us involved in Marafun.

“It has been a great fun thing for Forfar over the years, but this year it became the Angus Marafun and that made a huge difference in getting support from sponsors across Angus.

“This wasn’t just about the day, it was something that happened over a period of many months and there was just no stopping the enthusiasm of those we asked to help,” he said.

Local charities have also benefited from the event to the tune of four figures, and Ninewells Cancer Campaign chairwoman Lady Fiona Fraser said: “This is a fantastic contribution from Forfar Rotary Club and takes the total they have raised over the years for the campaign to over £160,000.

“As a group they have been our largest donor and we are very grateful to them for all their hard work that makes their events such a success.

“The Marafun is always fun and brings the whole community together.”

The fund is also set for another boost after the winners of a top sponsorship prize generously decided to donate the award back to Marafun.

The Four Chicks and a Dude team of pals Alison Kydd, Lesley Cromar, Maggie Hoggan, Debbie Sussams and 80-year-old Sam Connelly landed the prize of a stay in a 12-person luxury lodge donated by Piperdam resort for gathering the most Marafun sponsorship, but now hope to see it raise more money for the campaign when it goes under the hammer.
