Historic steam locomotive Union of South Africa makes thrilling return

Union of South Africa a historic A4 class steam locomotive has chugged through Courier Country.
The locomotive, which was built in 1937, began its journey in Perth on Thursday, before travelling through Dundee, Angus and up to Aberdeen.
Plumes of steam could be seen evaporating over the Tay as the train charged along the waterfront, before it lurched inland to steam north.

Social media buzzed with rail buffs and amateurs alike heralding the arrival of the celebrated train.
Startled onlookers tweeted pictures encapsulating a bygone era, while aficionados prepared to brave dreary conditions to get a look at the engine.

Fifer David Potter wrote: “Not a great day to go train spotting! Waders and waterproofs will have to be put on if I do go looking for Union of South Africa.”
60009 Union of South Africa has made several trips through Courier Country in recent times.
Some 35 A4 class locomotives were built by the LNER at Doncaster works, between 1935 and 1938.
