The Courier independence debates: Your chance to question the experts

The pros and cons of Scottish independence are being played out again and again by campaigners and now The Courier is introducing you to those at the heart of the argument in Perth and Perthshire and giving you the chance to quiz them.

Following our successful events in Dundee and Arbroath, we now want to introduce you to our next set of debaters.

Local matters are sure to be at the fore when Yes Scotland’s chief executive Blair Jenkins takes on Conservative Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Liz Smith on Thursday at the North Inch Community Campus in Perth.

Alongside them will be leading academic Matt Qvortrup, described by the BBC as “the world’s leading authority on referendums”, who will provide the independent expertise.

Each of our four big debates features senior campaigners on both sides of the fence and an impartial expert.

It finishes with a cracker on June 26 at Dunfermline’s Carnegie Conference Centre.

Sparks are sure to fly with Labour MP Thomas Docherty on the panel alongside Dennis Canavan, who represented the party at both Westminster and Holyrood but is now chairman of Yes. Professor John Curtice will complete the panel.

The events will be chaired in a Question Time-style format, with audience members able to submit questions in advance to ask on the night. It starts at 7pm and will last until 8.30pm.

If the opening salvo, fired at Dundee’s Gardyne Theatre, was anything to go by, then lively and illuminating exchanges should be expected.

Conversations about Scotland’s independence referendum are starting to dominate the coffee shops, workplaces and pubs, so why not take the opportunity to listen to and question those at the heart of the debate?
