A team of Angus-based Royal Marines have met the organisers of a fitness challenge they will set the benchmark on next month.
A 10-strong squad of men serving at RM Condor in Arbroath are due to take part in the Lanrick Challenge on July 19.
The challenge is an obstacle course set up on the Lanrick Estate in Stirlingshire, and the aim is to raise funds for two charities with strong local links, the Sandpiper Trust and Help our Wounded Royal Marines.
The group from Yankee Company of 45 Commando Group met the Sandpiper Trust’s Erica Silcocks and Emily Sandwell, along with Sarah and Michelle McDermott of Help Our Wounded Royal Marines.
Marines from the unit have been involved in the event’s organisation and course design, which will involve 6km and 12km cross-country and woodland courses, with obstacles, mud and water.
During initial training, Royal Marines become well accustomed to tackling obstacles on courses similar to the one that will be set up for the event, so the marines should set an ideal benchmark for the other teams to aim for.
Lieutenant Colonel Dan Cheesman, Commanding Officer of 45 Commando Group, said: “The Lanrick Challenge is raising money for two worthwhile causes and will be both a fun and physically testing event for those involved.
“My boys are always up for a challenge and I am sure there will be a lot of people out there looking forward to the opportunity of competing against the mighty Four-Five and we welcome the challenge.”
Marine Jake Banks is one of the group who will go to Doune and doubts his colleagues will get the rest of the day off after setting the time to beat.
He said: “We don’t really know what to expect but it’ll be tough.”
Emily said: “This is the first one and we are really keen to let everyone know it’s suitable for all the family, regardless of their age or ability.
“The idea is to have one every year. We are going to have a team in called Tough Mothers and we are going to try out against the time the marines have set.”
