The strength in depth of the light horse entry at Doune and Dunblane Show was underlined by the number of 2014 Royal Highland Show winners that came forward for competition.
During the course of the day’s judging, a number of multiple section champions emerged.
Taking both the top honour from the ridden horse section, as well as the reserve championship from the intermediate section, was Samantha Birkhill, and her 10-year-old gelding Master Klass.
The son of Master Imp came to Doune and Dunblane fresh from taking the reserve intermediate championship rosette and a win as an intermediate show hunter pony at the Royal Highland Show.
The gelding also stood supreme of the Lanark and Renfrew Hunt Show earlier in the year and took a section championship recently at Stirling.
Meanwhile, rising above Master Klass to top the intermediates was Fife partnership Felicity Baker and her ever-consistent coloured horse Alfie Moon III.
Not stopping there, Alfie progressed to scoop two further championship rosettes as the champion in-hand coloured and reserve from the ridden coloured section.
Felicity, who recently graduated from Dundee University but who will continue her studies after the summer to progress with a PGDE in Primary Education, has enjoyed considerable success with Alfie over the last few seasons.
This year the 11-year-old gelding was second at the Royal Highland, was both intermediate and coloured champion at Fife and was champion coloured at Central and West Fife.
In the Clydesdale horse section, both the champion and reserve were found in the offspring of last year’s Cawdor Cup winner Arradoul Balvenie.
Champion for 2014 was the yearling filly Roughlands Elegance, bred locally and shown by Iain Johnston, of Kirkton Farm, Bothkennar.
She has recently been placed second at the Royal Highland.
The reserve championship went to Elegance’s half sibling, two-year-old colt Barlauchlan Final Command, owned by Glenside’s John Adamson, shown by Ron Brewster.
