St Andrews University principal says staff should have ‘no constraints’ on talking about independence

The principal of St Andrews University, Professor Louise Richardson, has written to all staff in the hope that they will feel “no constraints” if they wish to speak publicly and express their views on Scottish independence.
Professor Richardson said: “I have been concerned to read in the press that academics may feel constrained about speaking publicly on the issue or fear adverse consequences if they do.
“I have concluded that it would not be in the best interests of the university for me to speak publicly on the issue at this time.
“I would very much hope, however, that university staff feel no constraints whatever in expressing their views … on the issue of independence.
“Indeed I would encourage you to do so.”
Earlier this week, Dundee East MSP Shona Robison was accused of questioning the integrity of Dundee University’s vice-principal after he chaired a pro-Union campaign meeting.
