An elderly couple have been taken to hospital following a crash on the M9 near Dunblane.
The incident happened at around 10.45am on Sunday and caused long tailbacks while two people were cut from the wreckage.
Police, fire and ambulance crews all attended the scene, on the southbound carriageway between junctions 10 and 11, close to the Keir Roundabout.
It is believed two vehicles were involved in the collision, with both leaving the road and careering down an embankment following the crash.
Firefighters used hydraulic cutting gear to free the casualties, who were then transported by ambulance to hospital in Larbert, where their condition is understood to be causing concern.
Police closed both Glasgow-bound lanes of the busy motorway, which is the main route to the city from the central belt, and diverted traffic through a nearby town.
However, the incident caused major traffic chaos as the road was closed to allow investigations to take place.
A Broughty Ferry motorist who was travelling back from Glasgow said: “There was a massive tailback. I saw two fire engines, a couple of ambulances and as many as six police cars.
“Two police cars were parked across both lanes, closing the road. Traffic was being diverted towards Bridge of Allan but it was slow going and there were huge queues.
“I wouldn’t like to say how long people were waiting for but put it this way, I was glad I was going in the other direction.”
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire Service confirmed it had attended.
She said: “We received a call at 10.48am. We extricated two people at the scene using hydraulic cutting equipment.”
A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed it had taken two casualties to Forth Valley Royal hospital.
