Wimbledon champion Andy Murray will be awarded the Freedom of Stirling.
The Olympic gold medallist said he was “thrilled to be coming home” ahead of receiving the honour at a special meeting of Stirling Council at Dunblane High School.
Murray said: “I am really looking forward to meeting the young people of Dunblane and Stirling.
“I’m proud to be receiving the Freedom of the City and want to share that experience with as many people as possible and across many of the schools in the area.”
Pupils will welcome Murray at Dunblane High School before Provost Mike Robbins, elected members and other invited guests participate in the ceremony, which will be streamed live to local primaries and the Victoria Hall in Dunblane.
Members of the public were encouraged to enter a ballot for tickets to attend the event and hundreds of entries were received, with about 200 people invited to attend the event.
Stirling Council agreed to honour Murray after his success at the London Olympics and his first Grand Slam win later that year in the US Open, but with his training and competition schedule it has taken some time to identify a suitable date.
Murray will also be honoured with a doctorate from Stirling University in recognition of his outstanding contribution to tennis.
The graduation will bring the British No 1 back to his sporting roots at the training base where he honed his skills as a young boy.
Murray added: “I trained on the courts at the Scottish National Tennis Centre at the University of Stirling when I was growing up and I remember playing against the students, which was great fun.
“I know there are many talented junior players practising there every day and I’d encourage them to keep working hard towards their goals.”
Professor Gerry McCormac, principal and vice-chancellor of the university, will present Murray with the award of Doctor of the University.
He said: “We are delighted to welcome back Andy Murray to the university campus. One of the greatest athletes of his generation, Andy has broken the boundaries of British tennis and elevated the profile of the sport to new levels.
“His exceptional sporting abilities, diligence and tenacity make him an inspirational role model to our students and to people across the world.
“We are grateful to Andy for his continued support of the university and honoured to recognise his extraordinary talent and contribution to tennis by conferring him with this award.”
