The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service today opened a new training centre at Dundee Airport.
The Compartment Fire Behaviour Training unit includes three cabins which can be rigged with different fires.
Firefighters demonstrated the dangers of confined fires by closing the doors of one of the cabins and allowing the flames to build.
One of the firefighters wore a camera provided by The Courier, capturing this stunning close-up footage of the flames.
Chief Officer Alasdair Hay said: “Many firefighters no longer get the sort of experiential learning we relied on in previous generations which is good news, because there aren’t so many fires.
“A facility like this gives us the opportunity to control the fires, control the experience in a much safer environment and be able to get much more experience so that when our firefighters are required to respond to live incidents they can do so much more effectively.”
The £400,000 training unit is the result of a partnership between the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd, which runs Dundee Airport.
Its location allows SFRS personnel to forge closer ties with airport firefighters, many of whom are retained firefighters for stations in Tayside.
