‘Triplets’ find artistic way of thanking Teenage Cancer Trust

An art student suffering from leukaemia is having an exhibition in her honour to thank the Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) for their support.

The exhibition is being held by Judith Beattie’s twin, Katie, and best friend and “honorary triplet” Shannon Beattie.

Judith and Katie are from Bridge of Weir in Renfrewshire and Shannon is from Dundee, where Judith came to study at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design.

Judith, 20, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in September on the second day of her final-year degree course at college.

She has been receiving treatment from the TCT Ward at Beatson Hospital in Glasgow, and the care has been so impressive she, Katie and Shannon are holding a fundraiser for TCT as a gesture of gratitude.

Katie said: “The TCT ward has been so helpful and supportive of Judith, and those affected, and we decided we wanted to give something back to TCT.

“They provide such an amazing environment for my sister to receive treatment. As my sister is an art student herself, the obvious choice of a fundraiser was to hold an art exhibition.

“I started asking family and friends and so far I have over 100 pieces donated to sell, with the number increasing every day.

“We have work by Judith on sale, and a great painting of Judith’s eye called Reflections by her best friend Shannon.

“The response from family and friends in many cases through the college in Dundee and the help we received in setting up the exhibition from Life with Art has been overwhelming.

“It’s a testament to how much we want to support Judith and also the TCT for the great support they’ve given us.”

The art exhibition will be held at Skypark in Glasgow from February 22 to March 2, and visitors will be able to purchase artwork by Judith, her family and friends, and established Scottish artists. Proceeds will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Angela Higgins, director of Resonance Capital and joint venture partner of Skypark, said: “We’re delighted to welcome this art exhibition to Skypark.

“When we were first contacted by Katie, we were moved by her sister’s experience, but what convinced us to work with them was the energy and commitment that the ‘triplets’ have shown in the organisation of this event.

“We’ve hosted many exhibitions at Skypark, and hope that our business community will support this event so we can demonstrate the great work TCT provide for those who need it.”

Full details of the exhibition are on Facebook. Anyone who can’t attend but wants to support the fundraising can do so at www.justgiving.com/TCTexhibitiongasgow.
