An Angus charity mainstay that has donated almost £200,000 to aid organisations around the world is at threat.
Kirriemuir’s Splash Relay Swim has a proud fundraising record of 25 years.
Every year since 1990, cash has been sent to chosen aid organisations around the globe.
But organisers have decided to cancel this year’s event, with another event dependent on interest.
A spokesman for Splash said: “Splash swims have for 25 years attracted huge support from over 50 local firms, the people of Kirriemuir and Forfar and every local school.
“Like me, some contributors have been involved in the event since day one.
“The very last thing we expected was in 2015, at the peak of the event’s success, to be announcing its cancellation.”
Charities for direct funding in 2014 include Erskine Scotland, Pelotas Children’s Home Brazil, Special Olympics, Alzheimer Scotland (Angus), Operacion San Andres Peru, Edinburgh Sick Kids, Children’s Diabetes Aberdeen, KIVA Loans, Sightsavers West Africa and Christian Aid.
More than 30 Tayside firms funded Splash as lane sponsors last year, donating a record £3,100.
Several long-serving key members of the organising committee have finally decided to end their service to Splash.
This year there have been no volunteers from Kirriemuir churches or the community to guide Splash to continuing success.
The key responsibilities of chairperson and treasurer remain vacant and as a result the present committee have voted to cancel the event.
Even at this stage offers of leadership will be welcomed.
The spokesman added: “Splash retains a willing committee of seven experienced remaining members who have each served for several years.
“But new leadership is needed,” he said.
