A gruelling challenge awaits two motorcycle fanatics who yesterday set out from Perth en route to the slopes of one of Europe’s most active volcanoes.
Fraser Band (38) and Steve Pirie (50) will put their endurance to the test as they cross nine countries in just three days on their way to Mount Etna in Sicily.
By the time they arrive in Italy the pair will have travelled more than 1500 miles and visited Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany, before heading on through Liechtenstein, France, Switzerland and Austria.
Their love of motorcycling will drive them to complete the challenge, but if that’s not enough then their pledge to raise funds for charity surely will.
Through Fraser’s work as a photographer in Perth, the two friends began to gain an insight into the role of the Perth and Kinross Association of Voluntary Services, (PKAVS) which offers support to young carers in Perthshire.
Having seen the strain put on some young people who care for sick or disabled relatives, they decided they had to help.
Their target is £10,000 for the charity, while they will also be doing their bit to raise the profile of Perth 800.
Fraser said, “We’d been getting a little nervous about what’s involved, but now it’s here we’re raring to go. People have been very generous with their donations and the money they raise will go to a great cause.
“PKAVS makes a big difference to young carers’ lives by providing respite care, days out and generally giving them a rare chance to be themselves.”
Fraser’s and Steve’s Etna challenge was given an official seal of approval as Perth provost Dr John Hulbert wished the pair well as they set off on their journey.
