Dundee conference will seek to tackle prostitution
ByThe Courier Reporter
A conference examining ways to stop women becoming involved in prostitution will take place in Dundee later this year.
Led by the Tayside Prostitution Steering Group, the conference is being arranged for October 25. Although a venue has yet to be found for the event, it will be chaired by Abertay University academic Dr Malcolm Cook.
Senior academics and commentators on prostitution, including journalist Julie Bindel, Professor Maggie O’Neill and Professor Jo Phoenix, both from Durham University, and Rosie Campbell of Leeds University, will attend.
Dundee charity Vice-Versa will also be taking part in the conference, which will look at what factors can lead women to take up prostitution and explore its links to sexual abuse, neglect and trauma during childhood.
It will also examine what can be done to prevent young women from the Dundee area getting involved in prostitution.
Dundee City Council Safety Partnership Safety Partnership is sponsoring the one-day conference in conjunction with Vice-Versa. Further details can be found at www.hfrg.org.uk/entry.htm.
