Two mystery heroes have been hailed for saving the lives of people in a fire-hit Dundee tenement.
The two late night revellers noticed smoke pouring from the top floor flat at 49 Ann Street in the early hours of Sunday and bravely entered the block to rouse the sleeping tenants.
Not only did they alert them to the danger in their midst and call the fire brigade, they helped John Garland from his third storey home in Flat F which was engulfed in flames Patricia Wieczorek (29), whose flat is across the landing from Mr Garland’s said: “These two guys are heroes. They got all of us up, helped some of us to safety and then left.
“I don’t think we would be alive today if it wasn’t for them. I want to thank them very much.”
The fire service received a call at 1.26 am from the two men to report the outbreak in the street off Hilltown. Units from the Macalpine Road station raced to the scene and found a group of seven tenants already standing outside.
One of them, Mr Garland, was having breathing difficulties from smoke inhalation and he was taken by the police to Ninewells Hospital for treatment. He was released on Sunday.
