Ninewells Hospital is to host the Duchess of Rothesay next week.
The duchess will visit three services at the hospital supported by charities of which she is president the type 1 diabetes charity JDRF, the National Osteoporosis Society and Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre.
She will meet staff and patients at the £15m Clinical Research Centre (CRC) a collaboration between NHS Tayside and Dundee University and a hub for clinical trial activity.
JDRF has invested around £1.2m in a hypoglycaemia research programme at the CRC. Hypoglycaemia occurs when the blood glucose levels of someone living with type 1 diabetes fall too low.
Without treatment it can lead to unconsciousness and even death but some people with type 1 diabetes have hypoglycaemia unawareness, which means they have little or no symptoms and this places them at higher risk of serious consequences.
The duchess will then meet clinicians, nurses and patients from the Fracture Liaison Service Tayside, along with representatives from the National Osteoporosis Society.
The service ensures that every fracture patient over 50 receives a “one-stop-shop” osteoporosis assessment to assess their future facture risk.
The final stop on her visit will be Maggie’s Dundee where she will be introduced to support specialists, nurse practitioners and fundraisers.
NHS Tayside chairman Sandy Watson said: “NHS Tayside will be delighted to welcome Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Rothesay to Ninewells, and I believe that she will be impressed by the scale of the partnership which exists between NHS Tayside, Dundee University Medical School, JDRF, the National Osteoporosis Society and Maggie’s Dundee.”
