Golfers at Downfield were put off their stroke at the sight of a stray horse cantering past, minus its rider.
Police were called out to investigate the mystery of a horse on the loose after several people spotted the gray, which had thrown its female rider and decided to stride out on its own.
The strange sight was witnessed by a regular group of three who had reached the 18th green around lunchtime, with one of them “duffing” his chip after being distracted by the horse’s appearance.
Another of the golfers, Gordon Grewar, claimed he missed his crucial putt for a par because of the equine incident.
Gordon, 50, said: “I was on the 18th, lining up my putt and one of the guys said, ‘Is that yours?’
“I thought I’d left a club lying behind me but when I turned round there was this horse bounding around the 18th green. A police car turned up but I think they just kept an eye on it.
“From the way it was going, it clearly knew its way home. I missed my putt too. Obviously my concentration was interrupted.
“I’m sure I recognised that horse I think I’ve bet on it before, coming home without its rider.”
A police spokesman said they had received two calls about a horse on the loose and officers had attended.
However the steed, thought to be privately owned, made its own way home. The spokesman said that thankfully the rider was unhurt in the incident.
Pam Gibb of Dronley Stables said she had been told about the incident but did not know who owned the horse.
