A massive search and rescue operation has failed to locate a man who plunged from the Tay Bridge in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The male was seen entering the water shortly before 1am leading to a full-scale coordinated search operation involving police, the coastguard, the Broughty Ferry Lifeboat and a rescue helicopter.
The fire service also attended with a boat, water rescue team, command support unit and two fire appliances. Despite their best efforts, the man could not be found.
Meanwhile, mystery still surrounds the man’s identity. Police have been studying CCTV footage and hope members of the public who may have been in the area at the time will come forward with more information.
Following the initial operation, a subsequent search of riverbanks was taking place on Sunday. The police have requested information from the public which may help them identify the man and ascertain why he entered the water.
It is also hoped that his family and friends may recognise his description.
Inspector Cathy MacDonald said: “I fully appreciate that detailing this incident in the media may result in friends and family recognising the gentleman from his description.”
“I realise that will be difficult. We encourage anyone who has information to come forward and can reassure his family that they will be supported in a compassionate and thoughtful way,” she said.
The man is believed to be in his late twenties or early thirties and was wearing a long dark jacket, trousers, white trainers and a Nepalese-style knitted beanie hat with ear flaps and tassels.
He has a full red beard and may possibly wear glasses. At the time of the incident he appeared to be listening to music on a phone or MP3 player.
Inspector Neil Anderson of Police Scotland added that inquiries into the full set of circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
He said: “Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the man in the area of the Dundee side of the Tay Road Bridge.
“If anyone who knows of anyone who fits this description or knows who he may be, please get in touch.”
Anyone who thinks they may have information that would help is being asked to call Police Scotland on101 as soon as possible.
