Street artist Banksy is not responsible for a spray-painted image of a small figure on a swing which appeared in Dundee, his office has confirmed.
Staff at the Brittle Bone Society in Guthrie Street discovered the graffiti on a fire door and sent photographs to Pest Control, a handling service acting on behalf of the elusive artist.
Bristol-born Banksy has built up a reputation for subversive street art but never confirms or denies authenticity of artworks. Pest Control was set up to establish legitimacy and prevent fraud, according to its website.
A short statement issued to the Dundee charity simply said: “The work in the image provided is not by the artist known as Banksy.”
Brittle Bone Society chief executive Patricia Osborne said: “At least we now know for sure.
“All the publicity was completely unexpected. It’s fair to say it was good for any charity to get noticed, and it helped raise awareness of osteogenesis imperfecta and the work that we do.
Police have said they will not take action against the individual responsible for the graffiti at the Brittle Bone Society but warned copycats that they could be prosecuted for vandalism.
