A YOUNG squaddie who was serving on the frontline when his baby boy was born has described how emotional it was to finally meet him.
Private Billy Sutherland (19) was on patrol in Afghanistan when his first-born, Bobby James, came into the world.
Pte Sutherland, from Portsoy in Aberdeenshire, is on a six-month operational tour of Helmand Province with The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland, (1 SCOTS).
Pte Sutherland kept in touch with family via satellite phone when his fiance, 18-year-old Amber Wilson, was in labour at Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin.
Bobby James, now two months old, arrived on October 22 and the teenage soldier held his baby in his arms for the first time last month.
Pte Sutherland, who has been in the Army since September, said: “The birth was early he was supposed to be due on November 4.”
He added: “It was weird meeting him (Bobby James) the first time because obviously I’ve been used to being out here.
“It was good, a weird feeling different to just your normal happy feeling.
“I was feeling emotional. It was weird but in a good way.”
