Kirriemuir’s celebration of famous son Sir J. M. Barrie brought a weekend buzz to the town as visitors from across the world enjoyed a packed programme of events.
The 150th anniversary of the Peter Pan creator’s birth has shone the spotlight on the wee red town and fine Saturday weather set the scene for a successful arts event as part of the Celebration of Imagination.
Venues including the town hall, library, church halls and various shops hosted events connected with the Barrie commemoration.
And the Peter Pan connection was very much in evidence with Captain Hook and his cohorts from Fife’s Herald Events team wandering the sunny streets.
The centrepiece of the weekend was a local history and genealogy fair in the newly re-opened Kirriemuir Town Hall on Saturday.
Stallholders included groups such as Kirriemuir Heritage Trust, Forfar and District Historical Society and the Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre, as well as Angus Archives and Dundee University Archive Services.
The day-long programme featured presentations in the town hall, ranging from a “threads of time” talk by Angus Council senior archivist Fiona Scharlau to memories of second world war evacuees in the Angus glens delivered by historian and lecturer Lisa Simmons.
Author visits, writing workshops, music as diverse as pipe bands and African drumming and a craft fair added to the busy schedule, and organisers said they were delighted with the success of the events and the response from visitors.
