Two youths were among the six drink-drivers caught by Tayside Police in the first week of a national summer safety campaign.
A senior officer described the combination of the young drivers’ inexperience and alcohol as “a potentially lethal cocktail”.
More than half of the drink-drivers stopped by police were caught as a result of calls from people concerned about the way they were driving. Five were men and one a woman.
Two other men both in their 50s were found to be impaired through drugs after being involved in separate collisions. Half of those detected were involved in accidents.
Chief Inspector Sandy Bowman, head of road policing, said, “Thankfully, but purely by chance, no one was injured in these incidents. This is not always the case and the results can be fatal.
“It is particularly concerning that two young and inexperienced drivers were detected. Such drivers are still learning road skills.
“They only have a very limited experience of driving and are still developing skills that evolve with either training or developing their experiences on a daily basis over years.
“Mixing that inexperience and lack of ability with alcohol or drugs creates a potentially lethal cocktail.”
In the week to Monday Tayside Police also caught 66 drivers and four passengers not wearing a seatbelt and 46 drivers using a mobile phone while driving.
A total of 138 speeding offences were also detected during the course of the week across the region.
In addition, 15 vehicles were seized after being driven with no valid insurance or driving licence and a further range of other road traffic-related offences.
