Fund-raisers complete Tour de Tay for Ninewells Hospital

A 36-strong group of cyclists have completed a Tour de Tay to raise thousands of pounds for the renal unit at Ninewells Hospital.

They set off from Kenmore and followed a route as close as possible to the river all the way to Dundee.

The journey was inspired by five-year-old Rory McNee, from Errol, who was left with damaged hearing and kidneys by meningitis in 2006 and stills visits the hospital for regular check-ups.

His father Eric said, “It went very well.

“We had 36 people at the start and 36 at the finish.”

He added, “There were no mishaps and we all had a really good time.”‘Tremendous response’It took seven hours to complete the ride and luckily the group enjoyed “fabulous” weather before the heavy rain arrived.

The only hold-ups were a few punctures with one rider having to cope with three and a stiff headwind on the final stint into the city.

The riders then celebrated with a buffet at Ye Amphibious Ancients Bathing Association’s clubhouse in Broughty Ferry.

Around £3500 has already been raised for the renal unit and the hope is to add substantially to that once sponsorship for the ride is in.

Eric said, “We have had a tremendous response from the public we have had people come up to us and say they want to make a donation.”

The money will be used to buy portable blood pressure monitors and associated computer software.
