Recycled charity ride is a real trial

A student in the middle of a charity cycle from John O’Groats to Land’s End stopped off in Dundee for a short break in his marathon task.

Peter Ananin (21) began his journey on July 4 and arrived in Dundee with the intention of repairing his bike, which has taken a bit of a battering from the windy weather over the past week.

The second-year Dundee University design student from Aberdeenshire does voluntary work with Tayside Recyclers and decided to build his bike from scrap parts.

He is raising cash for Parkinson’s and cancer charities and has given himself until the end of July to complete the journey.

Peter decided to undertake the challenge after losing three relatives to cancer very recently, while another relative suffered from Parkinson’s.

He set off from John O’Groats last Sunday and quickly found himself up against high winds and rain.

“Most people start from Land’s End and work up the way because the wind pushes them, but I decided to do it the other way round,” he said.

“I have been camping, but I had to stay in bed and breakfasts a few nights because the weather was so bad.

“I’ve also had a few problems with my bike and blew two tyres as I was coming down from the Highlands on Saturday.

“The terrain of the road is quite hard, but it’s either that or cycling down the side of the A9.”
