Those interested in tracing their family history have been given a helping hand after burial records at Markinch dating from more than 200 years ago were put online.
A register containing details of all those interred in Markinch Churchyard between 1799 and 1854 has been made more freely available after the list was compiled by members of the Fife Family History Society and reformatted by Markinch Parish Church member Ian Gourlay.
In the early 19th century, many surnames were not spelled as they are today and the registrar appears to have recorded many names exactly as they were pronounced to him.
The register also records burials in the new Northhall cemetery at Markinch, where the first interment was in 1854.
The Old Churchyard was closed on February 11, 1856, and the last interment there was in 1856 for ‘Robert, son of William Stenhouse at Plaisterers’, who was buried February 3, 1856.
A free copy of the burial register can be downloaded from the genealogy part of the church’s website www.markinchchurch.org.uk.
