A Dundee cyclist is in critical condition in Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital after crashing from his bike while on a run near Dunkeld.
Steven Donnelly (62), who lives in the South Road/Lochee area and is a member of the Dundee Wheelers Cycling Club, fell from his bike in wet conditions on Sunday and struck a wall.
Despite wearing a helmet, Mr Donnelly was seriously injured and his clubmates summoned an ambulance.
After being treated by paramedics at the scene he was taken by air ambulance to the hospital’s spinal unit.
His condition was last night described by Tayside Police as “critically unwell.”
Mr Donnelly’s wife Louise and his three daughters are believed to have travelled to Glasgow to be at his bedside.
The incident took place at 12.30pm on the A822 Amulree to Dunkeld road near the railway bridge known as Ladywell Bridge.
Mr Donnelly was taking part in an organised cycle run which went from Dundee through the Sma Glen, Amulree and Dunkeld before returning to Dundee.
Dundee Wheelers club secretary David McCallum said he had met the members a short time before the accident at a cafe in the area but was not on the actual run.
Mr McCallum said, “I’ve been told he came off his bike approaching a bend. I was there earlier and the rain came down really heavily. I think the road was slightly wet.
“All I know is that they phoned an ambulance but because of his injuries they got a helicopter to take him to Glasgow.
“It sounds as if he is in a pretty bad shape.”
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or who saw cyclists on the A822 Amulree to Dunkeld road between 12 and 12.30pm to call them on 0300 111 2222.
