A Montrose man who destroyed the interior of a moving car while driving on Fife’s busiest road has been admonished at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court.
In a case which Sheriff Maxwell Hendry called “almost beyond belief” Richard Barber (18) admitted that he and co-accused William McDonald smashed the windscreen, three windows, removed the dashboard and damaged indicator stalks and the steering column of the Ford Escort while on the A92 last month.
Barber, Beacon Road, pleaded guilty to using a car when its condition and accessories were such that it involved a danger of injury.
He also admitted to driving without insurance, for which he was fined £200 and banned from driving for three months.
McDonald (19), of Park Road, Kirkcaldy, admitted giving false details in an attempt to pervert the course of justice, and received 100 hours’ community service.
The pair were stopped at the Tullis Russell junction on August 3 after police were alerted to the vehicle by a member of the public.
The car was bought one week before the incident by Barber and was in good condition at that time.
Sheriff Hendry said parts of the case were “verging on the bizarre.”
Sentencing Barber, he said, “This was a strange incident but I have to deal with you driving without insurance and for driving a vehicle which was in an unfit condition.”
He told McDonald, “I want you to be under no illusion that this is a serious crime.”
