Investigations are continuing into the death in Johnshaven of a 65-year-old pedestrian named locally as Chris Cook.
Police said Mr Cook was killed after being being involved in an accident with a 4×4 on Wednesday night.
Witnesses believe he may have fallen or collapsed before the collision. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A police spokesman said, “Grampian Police attended at New Road, Johnshaven, where a male pedestrian was in a collision with a car. As a result of the collision, which happened just after 7pm, the pedestrian died at the scene.”
A Scottish Ambulance spokesman said they received a call about a man being in an accident with a vehicle.
Two ambulances were sent, one from Montrose and another from Brechin.
Roberta Still, owner of the Ship Hotel, where Mr Cook was a regular, said it was a sad night for everyone in the village. She said, “He came in twice a week. He kept himself to himself and was quite a quiet person.
“He was a really fine lad everybody knew Chris.”
Mr Cook, of Harbour Place, was an office holder with the local indoor bowling club. It is believed he settled in Johnshaven about 10 years ago and lived alone.
