FORMER RAF ground gunner George Henderson will celebrate his 100th birthday today.
The Second World War veteran served at Farnborough Airfield before he was transferred to Leuchars after contracting phlebitis in his legs.
Having trained as a bookmaker, he was put to good use organising rations and shifts for airmen.
In 1942 he was seconded to the navy aboard HMS Bulolo and assigned to Air Marshal Sir WilliamLawrie Welsh, the RAF officer who commanded British air operations during Operation Torch in north Africa.
“He was a marvellous man, like a father to me,” said Mr Henderson.
After the war he raised two children in Dundee with his wife Ethel, who died nine years ago, aged 89.
The former Hill Street Primary and Stobswell Secondary pupil spenthis working life with Andrew Chalmers Bookmakers.
Mr Henderson, who has two grandchildren, will celebrate his century with his son Ian.
He puts his long life down to clean living and regular exercise.
He said: “I go for a walk around the park every night. I’m a non-smoker. I’ve had one woman.
“I’ve lived a good life. I’ve never been in trouble and I just keep on breathing.”
