A 79-year-old Montrose woman is in Ninewells Hospital after tripping over a dislodged paving stone on the High Street.
A Montrose Community Council member said the state of the High Street was a disgrace and a survey revealed numerous broken and loose paving slabs posing a danger to pedestrians.
The woman broke her shoulder in the incident on Saturday afternoon near the Shelter shop.
The shop’s manager alerted the woman’s daughters and an ambulance was called.
The injured woman’s elder daughter said: “A couple of the slabs were moving significantly. The police happened to be driving down the High Street and stopped.
“One of them asked if we had a camera to take a photograph and then got cones out of their van and set them up round the slabs. On Sunday there was orange fencing round about.”
First thing on Monday morning workmen appeared and cemented down the loose slabs.
Alex Clark, a member of Montrose Community Council, said he raised the state of the pavements with a councillor.
He added: “The High Street is just a shambles. It’s four or five weeks since my walking friend and I did a survey of the pavements.
“It’s like crazy paving.”
A spokesman for Angus Council confirmed its roads supervisor had been contacted by the police following the elderly woman’s accident.
The spokesman added: “We erected barriers until a permanent repair was carried out on Monday, September 12.”
The area is inspected every month and necessary repairs are carried out “in the appropriate time frames”, the spokesman said, adding: We are always grateful to members of the public or community groups who point out defects to us, to augment our own inspections.”
Any faults can be reported to the council’s ACCESSline on 08452 777 778.
