Anger at vandals driving cars on Arbroath’s Victoria Park
ByDamon Rhind
Long sweeping tyre tracks have been scored into the grass at Victoria Park by vandals.
The turf bears the scars of one or more cars being driven at speed likely in excess of the 20mph limit that applies to the adjacent coastal road.
The damage was in recent days, although how many cars were skidding, sliding and “pulling do’nuts” alongside and over the football pitches is hard to say.
Residents taking to the Facebook community page Arbroath Online decried the mindless actions, complaining bitterly that those responsible had no respect for public property or regard for the mess they had created. Others pointed out the dangers posed by such behaviour and wondered what might have happened if the park had been busy with children playing, or people out walking.
There was also a call for police officers to give more attention to the area.
A council spokesperson said: “Although on this occasion damage to the grass was superficial, in less favourable conditions the damage can be extensive. If a driver were to lose control there is a serious risk of injury and we would ask anyone witnessing such anti-social behaviour to contact police on 101.”
