Fire tragedy Angus jockey Jan Wilson is to be remembered in a new Yorkshire community accolade.
The name of the 19-year-old from Forfar and that of fellow apprentice Jamie Kyne is to be given to the Bright Young Star honour in the Pride of Malton and Norton Awards which will be revealed next month.
Jan and Jamie were victims of a fatal fire in jockey’s accommodation at Norton last September.
The pair were promising prospects in the racing world with the Angus teenager having ridden three winners in her fledgling career.
Jan’s parents, Drew and Margaret, have established the Jockey Jan fund from their Greenhead Farm home just east of Forfar and it has already benefited a number of local organisations with which their daughter was connected during her formative years in Angus.
“It’s a nice thing for Malton to do as it recognises people’s achievements, especially that of the young,” said Margaret.
The awards ceremony on April 30 will also help raise further funds for Racing Welfare’s Malton Fire Disaster Appeal.
The fund aims to provide support for those affected by the tragedy and deliver a lasting legacy to the popular pair in the racing world.Peter Brown of Knottingley, North Yorks has been charged with the murder of Jan and Jamie and is set to face a 10-day trial at Leeds Crown Court beginning on April 26.
