Montrose Seafarers Haven has welcomed 3000 sailors through its doors since opening two and a half years ago.
“We’ve had around 30 different nationalities, but mostly sailors from the Philippines, Russia, the Ukraine, Poland, Indonesia and the Baltic states,” port chaplain Peter Donald told The Courier this week.
“Many of them can be up to a year away from home and are glad of the chance to come in to the Haven and use the internet or telephone to make contact with their families.”
Housed in the former harbour office at the dock gates, the building has been leased to the British and International Sailors’ Society by Montrose Port Authority and upgraded to provide the seafarers with a warm, safe and friendly port of call.
There is a small refreshment area, a lounge and games room and sailors can also pick up books, DVDs and warm clothing.
While the sailors society has taken the lead in the project, the response from local volunteers has ensured the facility is open every evening from Monday to Friday and in Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
In recognition of its importance it was given a highly commended award last year in the international category of the Angus Ambassador Awards.
“We are going from strength to strength and looking for further ways to support the welfare of all those whose maritime work brings them to the town,” said Mr Donald.
