The implications of closing Montrose sports centre for up to two years will be aired at a meeting for user groups tonight.
During construction of a £10 million pool, the town will be without many of its sports facilities.
Angus Council is to spend £225,000 providing temporary sports areas, including at the town hall, and it will brief users on the decant arrangements.
The council has said that it stands to lose a far greater sum if it fails to provide any stopgap measures.
At the same time these “temporary” works will provide a lasting legacy of improved facilities. Under the plans the council expect to invest £140,000 on improved features at Montrose Academy and a further £85,000 on modifications to the town hall.
In a report to the council, neighbourhood services director Ron Ashton revealed that the existing centre would normally take in around £735,000 over the 22-month construction period.
In a worst-case scenario he said that the council would miss out on almost all of that sum. Even if the council invests in the temporary solution and retains 80% of its customers during the disruption, the local authority is still looking at a fall in income of over £100,000.Tonight’s public meeting is in Montrose Academy Hall from 6pm to 8pm.
