Woman overcome by gas fumes

A woman has been taken to hospital after being overcome by gas fumes at her Arbroath home.

The woman, who lives in Fisheracre with her partner and two children, was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Ninewells Hospital. No one else was injured.

The leak occurred in a gas fire in the living room of her flat and firefighters who attended around 7.15pm on Wednesday isolated the gas supply.

Engineers from Scotland Gas Networks were called out but no one was evacuated from nearby homes.

Watch manager Grant Christie, of Tayside Fire and Rescue, said, “The family were outside the home when we arrived, the leak was from a domestic gas fire and we turned the appliance off and called Scotland Gas Networks. The woman went into the ambulance to be treated and the father had the two children.”

It is believed the family is of east European origin. No one was at the flat after the drama and neighbours said they were unaware of what happened other than the emergency services were there.

Nearby resident Mrs Margaret Burnett said, “I saw the fire engines but I don’t really know anybody who lives there. I didn’t know there was a gas leak.”

Zeynal Bekar, of Fisheracre Chip Shop across the road, said, “We didn’t really know what happened. I saw the ambulance and fire engines but there was no fire so I guessed it was a gas leak or something like that.”

A Scotland Gas Networks spokesman said, “We attended the scene and ensured the area was safe, but it was not a network problem.”
