Glamis Castle Virgin balloon’s sudden landing causes a stir

A hot air balloon has caused a stir after it landed at a farm near Forfar.

The Virgin balloon on a flight from Glamis Castle came down at Nether Finlarg near Inverarity on Thursday night.

It was initially reported as a crash landing, and police, fire and ambulance services were despatched to the scene just after 6pm.

They found that no one on board was injured or in need of medical attention.

Olly Rymer of Nether Finlarg was walking his dog when he saw the commotion.

“We saw the emergency vehicles rush to the scene but they seemed to have everything under control,” he said.

“I think it was one of the balloons from Glamis Castle and I’m glad that everyone was okay.”

A Virgin Balloon Flights spokesman said, “One of our Virgin balloons took off from Glamis Castle with 16 passengers at around 5pm.

“Conditions were good for flying and the pilot contacted air traffic control at Dundee Airport before the flight as usual.

“After a pleasant flight the pilot carried out a safe landing in a field at Gateside south of Forfar.

“Shortly afterwards the emergency services arrived following a report from a member of the public.

“It seems the fire brigade and ambulance left after crew informed them there was no reason for concern and the police left after speaking to passengers and the pilot, who was breathalysed.

“The crew then retrieved the balloon with the landowner’s permission and the passengers were transported back to Glamis.

“There was nothing unusual or unsafe about this flight, but we understand the police were just following procedure and the pilot and crew were happy to cooperate.

“With the good weather people can expect to see our balloons in the air and should not be concerned to see them landing in the countryside. This is normal because balloons travel in the direction of the wind.

“We would urge members of the public to speak to the pilot, crew and passengers if possible before calling emergency services unnecessarily.”
