An Angus mum’s tragic battle against a rare form of cancer has inspired her family to embark on a longest-day golf challenge in her memory.
Mother-of-two Susan Crosbie (38) died at Roxburghe House in Dundee in March after being diagnosed with signet ring cell myeloma in 2009, a cancer which affects just 100 people worldwide.
Now her husband Rab and brother Gordon will embark on four rounds of golf from 4.45am on Wednesday to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and Maggie’s Centres.
They will be playing all three golf courses at Carnoustie the Championship, Burnside Links and Buddon Links and 18 holes at Panmure, Barry.
All the family will be joining Rab and Gordon throughout the day before going for a celebration after they complete 18 holes at Burnside following a 5.30pm tee-off.
Gordon said it was just a pity his sister would not be there to enjoy it.
“We are hoping to raise about £2000,” he said. “We have collected quite a lot so far so I don’t think we are far off this total.
“As training goes, Rab has started a new job as full-time caddie at the Carnoustie Links. He is walking at least one or two rounds a day.
“As for myself, my wife says I play enough golf so I have not been doing any additional training or practice. We will just have to keep going hole after hole and hopefully the weather will be kind to us on the day.”
Susan, whose family and friends describe as “the life and soul of the party”, died after a long battle with the aggressive cancer.
Gordon added, “We would both like to say a big thanks to everybody that has sponsored us so far. We have had a lot of support from people that knew Susan or just want to sponsor worthwhile charities as Macmillans and Maggie’s.
“Carnoustie Golf Links have been a big help letting us play before opening time on the Championship course and arranging times for the other two courses and Panmure for letting us play their course.
“We plan the day to be a family affair we will have different family members walking round with us during each round. My dad and stepmum have drawn the short straw and will get up with us for the first round.”
