Tragedy struck at an Angus building site on Monday when a labourer took ill and died.
The man died at the site at the former Kinloch Primary School on Links Avenue around 8.30am.
It is believed he was from Dundee and about 50 years old.
Brown Construction contract director Keith Coul said: ”It would appear the man had an asthma attack or heart attack and passed away at the site.
“He’s a Dundee lad and a self-employed labouring sub-contractor. He’d only been with the company for a couple of weeks.
”We have shut down the site as a mark of respect to his family. It’s a very sad day. My lads all knew him from working on the site and our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
A spokesman for Tayside Police said: ”A man was taken ill and, despite the best efforts of his colleagues and an ambulance crew, died at the scene. As in all sudden deaths, a report will be made to the procurator fiscal.”
The former Kinloch Primary School site in the centre of Carnoustie is being developed to include a care centre and a housing complex for the elderly.
Local councillor Brian Boyd said: ”It’s just dreadful. Obviously my sincerest condolences go out to his family.”
