A 93-year-old man who was rushed to hospital following a fire in Angus on Monday has died.
The Arbroath pensioner sustained burns and was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.
Although his injuries were initially reported as not being life-threatening, police confirmed on Tuesday that the man had died.
Firefighters attended the blaze in the town’s Noran Avenue at around 1.30pm after a member of the public raised the alarm.
Two crews from the town’s fire station and one from Carnoustie attended the incident, using one hose reel and breathing apparatus to battle the flames.
The man was treated at the scene before being transferred to Ninewells Hospital.
A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: ”We received a call from Tayside Fire and Rescue at 1.33pm, relating to a location in Arbroath.
”At that time we were given the details that a man in his 90s may be trapped inside the building.”
Chief Inspector Graeme Donald of Tayside Police confirmed the man had sustained burns and been treated for smoke inhalation. He said the man was conscious and breathing when he was removed from the building.
Speaking before it was confirmed that the man had died, Mr Donald added: ”The man was taken to hospital and, at his age, smoke inhalation and burns can be quite serious.”
Earlier in the day firefighters attended another blaze in the East Grimsby area of Arbroath at 11.45am.
The small blaze broke out after a cooker went on fire and was put out within 20 minutes, using a carbon dioxide extinguisher and two breathing apparatus sets.
Nobody was injured during the incident.
