Tributes have been paid to a 93-year-old Angus man who died following a fire in Arbroath.
Hendry Lovely died at Ninewells Hospital on Tuesday morning, after suffering burns and smoke inhalation in Monday’s fire at his flat at 3 Noran Avenue.
Friends and neighbours told of their shock at the death of the pensioner, who had been conscious and talking when he was removed by ambulance, and was not thought to be in a life-threatening condition.
After being admitted to hospital Mr Lovely’s condition deteriorated and he was admitted to a high dependency unit.
Next door neighbours John (60) and Sandra (65) Tosh said they had last spoken to him during Monday’s incident, as smoke billowed out of his upstairs kitchen window.
Mrs Tosh added: ”I spoke to him when the smoke was coming out of the window and he said he had turned everything off. A passer-by phoned the fire service and I phoned his carer to tell her what had happened.
”The firefighters couldn’t find him in the house at first it must have been full of smoke.”
The couple confirmed Mr Lovely’s next of kin live in England and that he did not have any relatives in the local area.
A joint investigation into the fire has begun, with officers from Tayside Police and Tayside Fire and Rescue involved.
