A 58-year-old man from Angus has been killed while on holiday in Spain.

Montrose man Malcolm Pirie was killed while crossing a four-lane motorway during a holiday on the island of Gran Canaria.

The father-of-two, who worked in security and lived in Dunninald, was hit by a Renault Megane on the GC-500 road and was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency services arrived.

Spanish police are treating the circumstances of Mr Pirie’s death as a tragic accident and no charges have been brought.

Ram Silva, who owns the Apartments Elcardonal of Playa del Ingles where Mr Pirie was staying, said the Angus man was popular with all the staff at the holiday resort.

He and his family have been making regular trips to the island for years, and Mr Pirie was halfway through a two-week stay on his own when Friday’s tragedy struck.

“We have known him and his family for almost eight years,” said Mr Silva. “He was a friend of ours and used to come two or three times a year.

“It was a very bad day for us, for the cleaning ladies, for everyone here. He was a lovely man. He used to love walking and used to come over a lot.”

The road was closed for a number of hours following the incident, which took place just before 9pm on Friday.

Montrose councillors expressed their sympathies for the family, who have asked for privacy.

Councillor David May said he did not know Mr Pirie personally but news of the accident was a tragedy for the family and his friends in the town.

He said: ”My thoughts and the rest of the Montrose councillors’ I am sure are very much with the family at this tragic time.”

Councillor Paul Valentine said: ”The circumstance of Mr Pirie’s death is very sad, and it seems to have been avoidable. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time and I offer my condolences to them.”

An attache at the British Consulate in Tenerife said: ”We have notified the Foreign Office of the death of a Briton in Maspalomas on the south of the island, and have been doing all we can to help the man’s family.”

Emergency services were called to the incident immediately, but Mr Pirie was pronounced dead at the scene, which is close to Viuda de Franco square.

Mr Pirie was killed less than 50 metres away from a pedestrian overpass.
