A “lost and lonely” parrot that escaped from its Angus home has been reunited with its owners.
Eddie the Kakariki was found flapping around Brechin after flying out the door of his home in Slater Way.
The red and green bird was picked up by Scottish SPCA officers in Wards Road at the start of the month and was put in a cage next to a female cockatiel while his family could be traced.
Thanks to an appeal in The Courier Peter Taylor recognised his feathered friend instantly and got in touch with the charity to arrange a pick-up.
He said: ”We have had him since we moved from Montrose, so it has been over a year.
”Because we weren’t expecting to get him back we went and got two young budgies, so now we have a lot of birds!
”He was found by someone in Brechin and he is in fine condition. There are a lot of birds of prey around at this time of year so we were very worried about him and didn’t think he would survive.
“My daughter really loves him so she is happy he is home and everything is back to normal.”
Eddie is now back in his cage and is being spoiled by Peter’s wife Kathleen and their three young children.
Peter drove to the SSPCA centre at Petterden on Friday to pick up his pet, which greeted him with a distinctive whistle.
He said: ”I would just like to thank the person who found him and the staff at the Scottish SPCA for all their help.”
Centre assistant manager Lesley Clark said workers had named the bird Phoenix while he was in their care, adding that he seemed to strike up a special bond with his neighbouring cockatiel.
Originating in New Zealand, the name Kakariki means ”little parrot” in Maori. Scarce on the mainland, the breed has survived well on outlying islands, and through breeding in captivity.
