An Arbroath woman was rescued from her home when a fire broke out in the kitchen on Tuesday.
Emergency services attended a block of flats in Dishlandtown Street at around 2.30pm after a neighbour reported smoke belching into the close.
Firefighters evacuated the building and were able to remove the woman, who looked to be in her late 20s, before the flames could take hold of the first-floor address.
The woman appeared dazed as she exited the front door, and fell to the pavement as she tried to sit.
She was wrapped in a blanket by police officers and given a bottle of water while being assessed for smoke inhalation.
Ernie Hood (59), who lives in the flat below, said he called the fire service after hearing the smoke alarm.
He added: ”The alarm just kept on beeping and when I went up the stairs I smelled something burning. If we didn’t have the alarm system the whole place could easily have gone up.”
Mary Fenton (74) said Ernie’s quick thinking may have saved the woman’s life.
”It was just lucky that Ernie was in. I’m OK because I can get out of the back door, but she wouldn’t have been able to get out.”
Tayside Fire and Rescue watch manager Gordon Brown, said the fire arose from a pot of meat.
